A győri Széchenyi István Egyetem főépületének homlokzat-felújítása

This paper presents a case study on a building that was designed under the influence of the New Brutalism in the 1970s. The building is the educational building of the Széchenyi István University in Győr designed by Miklós Hofer. At first the genesis, the original design program, the architectural patterns, the functional and structural concept and the created architectural values of the building are revealed. Then several experts’ opinions are summarized about its physical and moral problems. All experts emphasized the necessity of the frontal modernization to improve the energy efficiency of the building bounding structures. This paper also presents a designed solution answering for the existing problems. From the description of the designed modernization it is visible how the house will be able to fulfill the recent functional and energetic requirements, and at the same time how it will be able to keep its original character after the modernization. This project can be an interesting example of a more and more frequent architectural job in which the buildings of the near past have to be modernized.
