Nature catastrophes took four million of human life in the 20th century. They victimize the most people considering all catastrophes. Certainly, in our country we don’t have to count on destructive earthquakes as in California, Japan, China and Indonesia but we must prepare for a magnitude 5–5,5 earthquake.
In this work the effect of a possible earthquake on a medium rise, twelve storied reinforced concrete building is analyzed. The paper contains calculation of the base shear force according to two different Hungarian rules and valuation of the analysis by Eurocode. The essential holding device elements are designed, their reinforcement drawings are audited, and some changes are proposed in accordance with the European Norms.
