During building diagnoses – especially in case of monumental buildings – the knowledge of the fabrication and properties of contemporary materials is indispensable. Apropos of the building diagnoses of the Budapest University of Technology and Economics researches were carried out in bibliotheques and archives about building materials applied in the hundred years old buildings. We suggested that the MI 15011-1988 (1988) technical directive should be upgraded and the development of new materials, technologies and the adaptation of extant ones are needed for the rehabilitation of ancient structures. We find it necessary to reconsider the background of the directive which modifies the building diagnosis and design.
